Methodology
Open-label crossover pharmacodynamic study measuring intragastric pH after betaine hydrochloride in healthy volunteers made hypochlorhydric with rabeprazole.
Key Findings
Betaine HCl rapidly re-acidified the stomach, dropping gastric pH from above 5 to below 3 within minutes and restoring dissolution conditions for weak-base drugs.
Conclusions
Betaine HCl temporarily restores gastric acid in low-acid states.
Limitations
Very small sample; induced rather than natural hypochlorhydria.
