Published in Clinical Nutrition ESPEN
Methodology
Exploratory analysis of the D-Health randomized placebo-controlled trial: 60,000 IU vitamin D or placebo monthly in Australian men aged 60-84, erectile dysfunction assessed after three years
Key Findings
Despite raising mean serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D from 76 to 106 nmol/L, three years of monthly high-dose vitamin D did not reduce the prevalence of erectile dysfunction compared with placebo.
Conclusions
Vitamin D supplementation does not improve erectile dysfunction in older, largely vitamin D-replete men.
Limitations
Exploratory secondary analysis, single self-reported ED question, older cohort with adequate baseline vitamin D.
Supplements Studied
After three years of supplementation, the mean serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D concentration was 76 nmol/L... in the placebo group and 106 nmol/L... in the vitamin D group
