Is Serum Vitamin D Associated with Depression or Anxiety in Ante- and Postnatal Adult Women? A Systematic Review with Meta-Analysis
Centeno LOL, Fernandez MDS, Muniz FWMG, Longoni A
Published in Nutrients
Methodology
Systematic review with meta-analysis of 15 cohort studies of serum 25(OH)D concentrations and depressive or anxiety symptoms in ante- and postnatal women (PROSPERO CRD42023390895).
Key Findings
Very low-to-low quality evidence linked reduced 25(OH)D with ante- and postnatal depressive symptoms; no association was found with antenatal anxiety.
Conclusions
Vitamin D status may relate to perinatal depressive symptoms, but evidence quality is very low.
Limitations
Cohort designs with high risk of bias; very low GRADE certainty.
Supplements Studied
Based on very low/low-quality evidence, it was observed that reduced serum 25[OH]D concentrations in the ante- and postnatal period are associated with the presence of ante- and postnatal depressive symptoms, respectively.
