A double-blind, placebo-controlled, exploratory trial of chromium picolinate in atypical depression: effect on carbohydrate craving

Published in Journal of Psychiatric Practice
Methodology
Double-blind, multicenter, 8-week replication trial randomizing adults with atypical depression 2:1 to 600 mcg/day elemental chromium as chromium picolinate or placebo; HAM-D-29 and CGI-I primary endpoints.
Key Findings
No significant difference between chromium picolinate and placebo on the primary depression endpoints; benefit appeared limited to a subgroup with high carbohydrate craving.
Conclusions
Chromium picolinate did not outperform placebo overall; any effect on carbohydrate craving is exploratory and subgroup-limited.
Limitations
Exploratory endpoints, small evaluable population (n=75), single 8-week course.
Supplements Studied
113 adult outpatients with atypical depression were randomized 2:1 to receive 600 mug/day of elemental chromium, as provided by chromium picolinate (CrPic), or placebo
