Vitamin D levels in patients with seborrheic dermatitis

Methodology
Observational case-control study comparing 53 patients with seborrheic dermatitis and 60 healthy controls on serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D, calcium, phosphorus and parathormone levels.
Key Findings
This study compared serum vitamin D, calcium, phosphorus and parathormone in 53 patients with seborrheic dermatitis and 60 healthy controls. Severe vitamin D deficiency was significantly more common in patients than controls (52.8% vs 25.8%, p = 0.003). Among those with severe deficiency, seborrheic dermatitis appeared at an earlier age (p = 0.048) and more often in women (p = 0.015). No correlation was found between vitamin D level and the site of skin involvement.
Conclusions
The fact that vitamin D levels decreased in patients with seborrheic dermatitis and patients with severe vitamin D deficiency develop seborrheic dermatitis earlier suggests that the low levels of vitamin D are related to seborrheic dermatitis.
Limitations
A single-centre case-control comparison of 113 people that can only show association, not cause; no supplementation was tested and factors such as sun exposure and time spent indoors were not accounted for in the abstract.
