    Published in Diabetic Medicine

    Methodology

Systematic review and random-effects meta-analysis of 27 randomized controlled trials of treatments for diabetic peripheral neuropathy of the feet.

    Key Findings

Alpha-lipoic acid 600 mg intravenously reduced total symptom score by -2.45 (95% CI -4.52 to -0.39) versus placebo, with smaller reductions for other regimens.

    Conclusions

Alpha-lipoic acid shows symptom benefit in diabetic peripheral neuropathy, but the evidence base is heterogeneous.

    Limitations

Few trials per treatment, short follow-up, variable risk of bias.

    Supplements Studied

In the meta-analysis of trials of α-lipoic acid versus placebo, total symptom score was reduced by -2.45 (95% CI -4.52; -0.39) with 600 mg i.v. α-lipoic acid
