Published in Obes Surg, Vol. 32 (9), pp. 3104-3112
Methodology
Meta-analysis of 11 studies in 1,494 patients after gastric bypass procedures, searched in PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science up to February 2022.
Key Findings
Pooled prevalence of vitamin B1 deficiency after bariatric surgery was 27%.
Conclusions
The authors recommend lifelong thiamine supplementation and standard follow-up to monitor diet.
Limitations
Mostly retrospective studies of gastric bypass only; deficiency definitions and timing vary between studies, and the recommendation for lifelong supplements is the authors' own.
Supplements Studied
Thiamine supplements should be prescribed for the patients for the rest of their lives
