Methodology
Non-randomised clinical study in 106 people with metabolic syndrome: groups with staphylococcal, E. coli or streptococcal infections treated with oregano essential oil for 10 days, compared with an untreated, uninfected control group and with antibiotic treatment.
Key Findings
The authors report that oregano essential oil reduced minor uncomplicated infections, with no intestinal side effects and an improved phase angle after 10 days.
Conclusions
Oregano essential oil may have an antibacterial effect similar to antibiotics without promoting dysbiosis in metabolic syndrome.
Limitations
Not randomised or blinded; group sizes, dose and infection outcomes are not quantified in the abstract; comparison with antibiotics unclear.
Supplements Studied
EOO may exhibit an antibacterial effect, similar to the antibiotic treatment
