Methodology
Randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study in children with recurrent respiratory tract infections, assessing how common atopy was and whether pleuran changed laboratory markers of allergic inflammation.
Key Findings
Atopy was common and appeared to contribute to the children's respiratory illness. Pleuran significantly reduced peripheral blood eosinophilia and stabilised serum total IgE, more clearly in atopic children.
Conclusions
The authors proposed pleuran as a possible complementary therapy for allergic patients, based on this previously undescribed anti-allergic effect.
Limitations
Laboratory markers only, with no allergy symptom outcomes. Sample size and dose are not given in the abstract. Children were selected for recurrent infections, not allergic rhinitis. Same research group.
