Nickles MA, Hasan A, Shakhbazova A, Wright S, Chambers CJ, Sivamani RK
Published in J Altern Complement Med, Vol. 27 (2), pp. 108-119
Methodology
Systematic search of EMBASE, MEDLINE and Cochrane CENTRAL for human studies of probiotics, herbal preparations or diet to treat SIBO.
Key Findings
Eight studies qualified: five on probiotics, one on diet and two on herbal medicines. Studies were small, used non-standard formulations, and varied in breath-testing and symptom methods.
Conclusions
Preliminary evidence supports a role for alternative therapies, but large randomised placebo-controlled trials are needed.
Limitations
Few, small and heterogeneous studies; no pooled analysis was possible.
