Park H, Kim CW, Kim SS, Park CW
Published in Annals of Dermatology
Methodology
Open-label study of zinc gluconate 50 mg/day for 12 weeks in alopecia areata patients with low baseline serum zinc.
Key Findings
Serum zinc rose significantly and 9 of 15 patients showed positive therapeutic effect, with responders having larger zinc increases than non-responders.
Conclusions
Zinc repletion may help the subgroup of alopecia areata patients with documented zinc deficiency, but is not a general treatment.
Limitations
No control group; small sample; open-label; short follow-up.
Supplements Studied
Serum zinc rose significantly and 9 of 15 alopecia areata patients with low zinc showed positive therapeutic effect.
