Methodology
Six-to-eight week double-blind placebo-controlled RCT of D-chiro-inositol 1200 mg/day in 44 obese women with polycystic ovary syndrome.
Key Findings
Insulin area under the curve after glucose challenge fell, serum free testosterone decreased by 55%, and 19 of 22 treated women ovulated versus 6 of 22 on placebo.
Conclusions
D-chiro-inositol improved insulin sensitivity, lowered androgens and increased ovulation frequency in obese women with PCOS.
Limitations
Small single-centre trial; obese participants only; short duration; results not consistently replicated at higher doses.
