Regression of gastroesophageal reflux disease symptoms using dietary supplementation with melatonin, vitamins and aminoacids: comparison with omeprazole

    Pereira RS

Published in Journal of Pineal Research

    Methodology

Single-blind randomized study comparing a supplement containing melatonin, L-tryptophan, vitamin B6, folic acid, vitamin B12, methionine and betaine in 176 patients against omeprazole 20 mg in 175 patients with GERD

    Key Findings

The melatonin-containing combination produced symptom regression comparable to omeprazole in this single-blind trial.

    Conclusions

A frequently cited but methodologically weak trial of a multi-ingredient formula, not melatonin alone.

    Limitations

Single-blind; single investigator; multi-ingredient product; results never independently replicated.

    Supplements Studied

    Melatonin
    Compound

Melatonin has known inhibitory activities on gastric acid secretion and nitric oxide biosynthesis.
