    Bee pollen sensitivity in airborne pollen allergic individuals

    Methodology

    Controlled skin prick testing study of five bee pollen extracts in 202 volunteers, of whom 145 were atopic patients with respiratory allergy and 57 were non-atopic controls, plus botanical and quantitative pollen grain analysis.

    Key Findings

    All bee pollen samples contained high concentrations of Oleaceae pollen and smaller amounts of anemophilous pollens, and cutaneous reactivity to bee pollen extracts correlated strongly with olive, grass and mugwort sensitivity.

    Conclusions

    Bee pollen retains allergenic potential and can provoke reactions in individuals sensitised to airborne pollens.

    Limitations

    Skin prick reactivity is a sensitisation marker rather than proof of clinical reaction to ingestion; single-country pollen sources.
