Herbal drug BNO 1016 is safe and effective in the treatment of acute viral rhinosinusitis

Methodology
Pooled efficacy analysis of two randomised, placebo-controlled trials with safety assessed per individual trial; oral 3 x 160 mg BNO 1016 or placebo for 15 days across five site visits; symptoms scored per EPOS 2012 with ultrasonography to confirm diagnosis and remission, plus SNOT-20 GAV quality of life.
Key Findings
Pooled efficacy data from two similar randomised placebo-controlled trials covered 589 patients with acute viral rhinosinusitis taking 3 x 160 mg of the herbal preparation BNO 1016 (n = 294) or placebo (n = 295) for 15 days. The major symptom score fell by a mean of 10.02 points to 2.47 with BNO 1016 versus 9.87 to 3.63 with placebo, a between-group difference of 1.16 points at end of therapy (p < 0.0001). Patient-reported quality of life on the SNOT-20 GAV also favoured the herbal treatment (p = 0.0015).
Conclusions
Daily intake of 480 mg BNO 1016 for 15 days is an effective treatment in acute viral rhinosinusitis.
Limitations
A pooled analysis of two manufacturer-run trials rather than a prospectively planned meta-analysis; the 1.16-point symptom difference is small relative to the roughly 10-point improvement seen in both arms, and follow-up stopped at 15 days.
