Inácio Silveira DQ, Lia EN, Massignan C, Stefani CM
Published in The Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry
Methodology
PROSPERO-registered systematic review of 17 studies across 11 databases comparing topical natural substances with conventional antifungals for denture stomatitis, synthesised without meta-analysis
Key Findings
Uncaria tomentosa, alongside propolis, green tea, ginger and other natural products, appeared to have efficacy and safety similar to nystatin or miconazole, but overall evidence certainty was low.
Conclusions
Natural products including cat's claw may be comparable to conventional antifungals for denture stomatitis, though evidence quality is insufficient for firm recommendations.
Limitations
Heterogeneous small trials; narrative synthesis without pooled effect sizes; low certainty of evidence.
Supplements Studied
Propolis, green tea, ginger, Zataria multiflora, chitosan, garlic, Artemisia, Schinus terebinthifolius Raddi, Uncaria tomentosa, Punica granatum, and Ricinus communis appeared to have similar efficacy and safety when compared with nystatin or miconazole.
