    Published in Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica

    Methodology

Systematic review and network meta-analysis of 53 randomised controlled trials of pharmacological and non-pharmacological insomnia treatments in adults over 65, searched to May 2019

    Key Findings

Benzodiazepines, antidepressants and z-drugs outperformed comparators on total sleep time and sleep quality, while limited non-pharmacological evidence favoured acupressure, auricular acupuncture, mindfulness-based stress reduction and tart cherry juice.

    Conclusions

Confidence in the evidence for insomnia treatments in older adults is very low, and no treatment can be recommended with certainty.

    Limitations

Sparse network connectivity, few trials per comparison, and very low overall certainty of evidence.
