Systematic review examining associations between magnesium intake and sleep duration, quality, and disorders across multiple studies.
Methodology
Systematic review of observational studies and randomised trials examining magnesium intake or supplementation and sleep outcomes.
Key Findings
Across observational studies and a small number of randomised trials, higher magnesium intake or status was associated with better sleep quality and normal sleep duration, but the randomised evidence in adults was sparse, small and of low certainty.
Conclusions
Current evidence linking magnesium to improved sleep is largely observational; the popular use of magnesium as a sleep aid outruns the strength of the trial data.
Limitations
Few randomised trials, heterogeneous sleep measures (mostly self-report), small samples, and confounding between magnesium intake and overall diet quality.
