    Horvath A, Lukasik J, Szajewska H

Published in The Journal of Nutrition

    Methodology

Systematic review and meta-analysis of 5 randomized controlled trials comparing omega-3 fatty acid supplementation with placebo or no supplementation in children with ASD.

    Key Findings

With few exceptions, no statistically significant differences in ASD symptoms between omega-3 and control groups on validated scales; parent-rated lethargy improved on the Aberrant Behavior Checklist.

    Conclusions

Current evidence does not support omega-3 fatty acid supplementation for improving core ASD symptoms in children.

    Limitations

Small pooled sample, heterogeneous doses and outcome scales, short trial durations.

    Supplements Studied

With 4 exceptions, there were no statistically significant differences in ASD symptoms between groups measured by validated scales.
