    Vitamin D and Muscle Function in Older Adults

    Study demonstrating vitamin D's effects on muscle strength, physical performance, and fall prevention in elderly populations.

    Review of mechanistic, observational and randomised trial evidence on 25-hydroxyvitamin D status, muscle strength, balance and fall risk in older adults, with dose-response consideration for supplementation.

    This review of trials and observational data concluded that vitamin D acts on skeletal muscle via the vitamin D receptor, that low 25(OH)D is associated with reduced muscle strength, more body sway and higher fall risk in older adults, and that supplementation of roughly 700-1000 IU/day improves balance and reduces falls by around 19%, with little benefit at lower doses.

    Adequate vitamin D intake (about 800-1000 IU/day) improves muscle function and reduces falls in older adults, particularly those with low baseline levels.
