Ginseng for Erectile Dysfunction: A Cochrane Systematic Review
Lee HW, Lee MS, Kim TH, Alraek T, Zaslawski C, Kim JW
Published in The World Journal of Men's Health
Methodology
Cochrane systematic review of nine randomized or quasi-randomized controlled trials of any ginseng type versus placebo or conventional treatment, GRADE-rated
Key Findings
Ginseng showed a trivial effect on the IIEF-15 erectile function domain (MD 3.52, 95% CI 1.79 to 5.25; low certainty) and may improve self-reported ability to have intercourse (RR 2.55, 95% CI 1.76 to 3.69; low certainty), with little to no difference in adverse events.
Conclusions
Ginseng may produce small improvements in erectile function, but the certainty of evidence is low.
Limitations
Small trials, low certainty of evidence, heterogeneity in ginseng preparation and dose.
Supplements Studied
Ginseng appears to have a trivial effect on erectile dysfunction when compared to placebo based on the Erectile Function Domain of the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF)-15 instrument (mean difference [MD] 3.52, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.79 to 5.25; I²=0%; 3 studies; low CoE)
