Methodology
Randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of curcuminoids 1,500 mg/day plus piperine for 6 weeks in knee osteoarthritis, measuring a panel of serum inflammatory cytokines and hs-CRP.
Key Findings
In 40 patients with knee osteoarthritis, curcuminoids (1,500 mg/day with piperine) for 6 weeks significantly reduced circulating inflammatory cytokines including IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, TNF-alpha and hs-CRP compared with placebo.
Conclusions
Curcuminoid supplementation lowered systemic inflammatory mediators in knee osteoarthritis, supporting an anti-inflammatory mechanism behind reported symptom benefits.
Limitations
Small sample, 6-week duration, biomarker rather than clinical primary endpoints, single-centre design, and reliance on a piperine-enhanced formulation that limits generalisability to other curcumin products.
