Methodology
Randomized controlled trial of 44 obese patients with plaque psoriasis on immunosuppressive drugs assigned for six months to usual diet or an energy-restricted diet (20 kcal/kg ideal body weight/day) enriched with n-3 PUFAs (average 2.6 g/day).
Key Findings
PASI fell from 7.7 to 2.6, itch scores from 15.4 to 1.8 and DLQI from 19.5 to 5.1 in the intervention group versus controls, alongside significant reductions in weight, waist circumference, triglycerides and cholesterol.
Conclusions
An energy-restricted, n-3-rich diet improves clinical response to immunomodulating drugs in obese psoriasis patients.
Limitations
Small single-centre trial, not blinded, weight loss confounds the omega-3 contribution, diet rather than isolated supplement.
Supplements Studied
Specifically Psoriasis Area Score Index (7.7 ± 3.7, 5.3 ± 4.3 and 2.6 ± 3.0, respectively; p < 0.05), itch scores and Dermatological Life Quality Index all decreased respect to baseline.
