    Effect of Omega-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acid Supplementation on Clinical Outcome of Atopic Dermatitis in Children

    Methodology

    Randomised controlled trial of omega-3 PUFA supplementation for 16 weeks in children with atopic dermatitis, using SCORAD severity index and treatment-use outcomes.

    Key Findings

    In 52 children with atopic dermatitis, omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid supplementation for 16 weeks was associated with improvement in SCORAD severity scores, with the largest gains in children with higher baseline severity, while differences from control were modest overall.

    Conclusions

    Omega-3 supplementation produced modest improvement in paediatric atopic dermatitis severity and may be a reasonable adjunct to standard topical care.

    Limitations

    Small single-centre sample, 16-week duration, concomitant topical therapy that could mask or amplify effects, subjective components of SCORAD scoring, and limited generalisability across age groups and diets.

    Supplements Studied

    Omega-3 fatty acids in combination with GLA and vitamin D may decrease symptoms and were associated with an improvement clinical picture of AD in children.
