Comparative effectiveness of probiotic strains for the treatment of pediatric atopic dermatitis: A systematic review and network meta-analysis

Systematic review and network meta-analysis of 22 randomised controlled trials covering 28 probiotic strains for paediatric atopic dermatitis, searched to January 2020 and appraised with GRADE.
Key Findings
A mixture containing B. bifidum with L. acidophilus, L. casei and L. salivarius (Mix6) probably reduced atopic dermatitis symptoms versus placebo (SMD -0.85, 95% CI -1.50 to -0.20), based on moderate certainty evidence from only 40 participants.
Conclusions
Certain probiotic mixtures including B. bifidum may reduce paediatric atopic dermatitis severity, but strain-level evidence is sparse and imprecise.
Limitations
Very small contributing trials; indirect network comparisons; B. bifidum only tested as part of multi-strain mixtures, so single-strain effects are unknown.
Supplements Studied
