Published in American Journal of Clinical Nutrition
Methodology
Meta-analysis of 28 randomized controlled trials of flaxseed and flaxseed-derived products on blood lipids.
Key Findings
Whole flaxseed and lignan supplements modestly lowered total and LDL cholesterol, whereas flaxseed oil had no significant lipid effect; benefits were largest in postmenopausal women and hypercholesterolemic participants.
Conclusions
Whole flaxseed lowers cholesterol modestly; flaxseed oil specifically does not.
Limitations
Heterogeneous preparations, mostly short trials, publication bias possible.
Supplements Studied
Significant reductions in cholesterol were observed with whole flaxseed and lignan supplements but not with flaxseed oil.
Outcomes Measured
Significant reductions in cholesterol were observed with whole flaxseed and lignan supplements but not with flaxseed oil.
