Methodology
Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of HMPL-004 1,200 mg or 1,800 mg daily vs placebo in adults with mild-to-moderate ulcerative colitis.
Key Findings
Clinical response at week 8 was 45% (1,200 mg) and 60% (1,800 mg) vs 40% placebo; only the 1,800 mg dose reached significance (P=0.0183). Remission rates (34%, 38% vs 25%) were not significant.
Conclusions
HMPL-004 1,800 mg daily increased clinical response versus placebo in mildly to moderately active ulcerative colitis.
Limitations
Remission endpoints were not significant, adverse event rates were high in all arms (53-60%), and the extract is a proprietary preparation that may not match commercial products.
Supplements Studied
Patients with mildly to moderately active ulcerative colitis treated with A. paniculata extract (HMPL-004) at a dose of 1,800 mg daily were more likely to achieve clinical response than those receiving placebo.
