    Methodology

    Cochrane systematic review of 14 trials of iodine supplementation before, during and after pregnancy on maternal, infant and child outcomes

    Key Findings

    Iodine supplementation reduced maternal postpartum hyperthyroidism and raised infant thyroglobulin adequacy, but evidence for improved child cognitive outcomes was insufficient and digestive intolerance was more common.

    Conclusions

    Iodine supplementation in pregnancy has clear biochemical effects but unproven benefit for child development in mildly deficient settings.

    Limitations

    Few trials; low to very low certainty for most outcomes.
