Methodology

Key Findings
In 3,964 CARDIA participants followed over years, higher dietary magnesium intake was associated with lower odds of short sleep duration and with better self-reported sleep quality, though associations were attenuated after adjustment for overall diet quality and other nutrients, and the relationship differed by sex.
Conclusions
Higher dietary magnesium intake is modestly associated with healthier sleep duration and quality in a large adult cohort, but the observational design and dietary confounding mean this does not demonstrate that magnesium supplements improve sleep.
Limitations
Observational cohort with self-reported diet history and self-reported sleep outcomes, no objective polysomnography, residual confounding by overall diet quality and lifestyle, and magnesium intake tracks with generally healthier eating patterns.
Supplements Studied
Mg intake was borderline associated with better sleep quality... Randomized controlled trials with objective measures of sleep are warranted to establish the potential causal inference.
