Borage oil in the treatment of atopic dermatitis
Foster RH, Hardy G, Alany RG
Published in Nutrition
Methodology
Systematic review of 12 controlled clinical trials of oral or topical borage oil for atopic dermatitis plus one prevention trial.
Key Findings
Results were highly variable across trials; borage oil contains 2-3x more gamma-linolenic acid than evening primrose oil, but effect sizes on eczema severity were inconsistent and many trials were small.
Conclusions
Evidence does not support a consistent benefit of borage oil for atopic dermatitis; larger, better-designed trials are needed.
Limitations
Included trials were small with methodological limitations; heterogeneous doses, formulations and outcome measures; no quantitative pooling.
Supplements Studied
