Methodology
Randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled parallel trial in 64 menopausal women (54 completers) given two Femal pollen-extract tablets or placebo daily for three months after a one-month run-in, with Menopause Rating Scale and daily symptom diaries.
Key Findings
65% of the pollen extract group responded with reduced hot flushes versus 38% on placebo (p<0.006), and diary-recorded hot flushes fell 27% more than placebo after three months (p<0.026).
Conclusions
A pollen-extract remedy reduced hot flushes and improved quality of life relative to placebo in menopausal women.
Limitations
Small single-product trial, high dropout relative to sample, self-reported outcomes, manufacturer-linked product.
Supplements Studied
In the active-treatment group, 65% responded with a reduction in hot flushes compared with 38% in the placebo group (p<0.006).
Outcomes Measured
Femal, a herbal remedy made from pollen extracts, reduces hot flushes and improves quality of life in menopausal women.
The number of hot flushes registered in diaries declined after 3 months by 27% as compared to the placebo group (p<0.026).
