    Methodology

    Randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of 900 mg/day algal DHA for 24 weeks in adults 55+ with subjective memory complaints, with computerised CANTAB cognitive testing and plasma fatty acid measurement.

    Key Findings

    In the MIDAS trial, 485 healthy older adults with age-related cognitive decline took 900 mg/day algal DHA or placebo for 24 weeks; DHA nearly halved the number of errors on a paired associate learning test and improved immediate and delayed verbal recognition memory, with plasma DHA roughly doubling.

    Conclusions

    DHA supplementation produced measurable improvements in episodic and working memory in healthy older adults with mild age-related memory decline, supporting a benefit in pre-dementia decline rather than established Alzheimer disease.

    Limitations

    24-week duration cannot show whether benefits persist or prevent dementia, participants were well-educated volunteers with low baseline DHA intake, multiple cognitive endpoints raise multiplicity concerns, and the study was funded by the DHA manufacturer.
