Dose-response meta-analysis of observational and interventional studies of dietary, supplemental and serum vitamin E and age-related cataract
Key Findings
Dietary vitamin E (RR 0.73), dietary plus supplemental intake (RR 0.86) and high serum tocopherol (RR 0.77) were associated with lower cataract risk, but supplemental intake alone was not significant (RR 0.92, 0.78-1.07)
Conclusions
Dietary vitamin E intake, not supplementation, tracks with lower cataract risk
Limitations
Mostly observational data subject to confounding by overall diet quality
Supplements Studied
Supplemental vitamin E intake was non-significantly associated with ARC risk (relative risk=0.92; 95% CI 0.78, 1.07).
