Key Findings
Adding vitamin D3 to standard antihistamine/intranasal steroid therapy in allergic rhinitis produced greater reductions in nasal symptom scores and in serum IgE and Th2-associated cytokines than standard therapy alone, with the largest benefit in patients who were vitamin D deficient at baseline.
Conclusions
Vitamin D3 appears to be a useful adjuvant in allergic rhinitis, particularly for deficient patients, but it is an add-on rather than a replacement for standard treatment.
Limitations
Single-centre trial with limited reporting of randomisation and blinding detail, immunological surrogate endpoints, short follow-up, and results likely dependent on baseline vitamin D status of the population.
