    Efficacy of fish oil and its components in the management of psoriasis: a systematic review of 18 randomized controlled trials

    Methodology

    Quantitative systematic review of six databases through March 2019; 18 RCTs with 927 participants evaluating fish oil or omega-3 PUFAs as monotherapy or adjunct in psoriasis.

    Key Findings

    Fish oil monotherapy had no effect on PASI (P = 0.47), lesion area (P = 0.34) or pruritus (P = 0.62); combined with conventional treatment it reduced PASI (MD -3.92; 95% CI -6.15 to -1.69) and lesion area, and improved cardiometabolic risk markers.

    Conclusions

    Omega-3 fatty acids are not effective alone but may add benefit alongside conventional psoriasis therapy and improve comorbidity risk factors.

    Limitations

    Included trials heterogeneous in dose, route (oral vs infusion) and background therapy; several older and at risk of bias.

    Supplements Studied

    Fish oil or ω-3 PUFAs combined with conventional treatments, however, resulted in a decreased PASI score (mean difference [MD], -3.92; 95%CI, -6.15 to -1.69; P = 0.0006) and lesion area.
