Evaluating the Effects of Agomelatine on Polysomnography Parameters in Patients with Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Published in Journal of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences

    Methodology

Randomised placebo-controlled trial of agomelatine in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea with polysomnography before and after treatment assessing respiratory and sleep-architecture parameters.

    Key Findings

In 70 patients with obstructive sleep apnoea, short-term agomelatine did not significantly change the apnoea-hypopnoea index or oxygen desaturation, but improved sleep architecture measures including sleep efficiency and subjective sleep quality compared with placebo.

    Conclusions

Agomelatine improves sleep continuity without worsening or correcting respiratory events in OSA, so it may help sleep complaints but is not a treatment for the apnoea itself.

    Limitations

Very short one-week exposure, single-centre, modest sample, no long-term safety or adherence data, and no comparison with CPAP or other hypnotics.
