Methodology
Clinical case report with dermatological examination, micronutrient laboratory testing and follow-up after supplementation in two post-bariatric breastfeeding women.
Key Findings
Two breastfeeding women who had undergone bariatric surgery developed phrynoderma (follicular hyperkeratosis from vitamin A deficiency) and acquired acrodermatitis enteropathica (zinc deficiency); both skin conditions resolved rapidly after targeted vitamin A and zinc repletion.
Conclusions
Post-bariatric patients, especially while breastfeeding, are at risk of severe micronutrient deficiency dermatoses that reverse quickly with supplementation - a case for routine monitoring rather than evidence of general supplement benefit.
Limitations
Two-patient case report with no control or comparison; cannot estimate incidence or generalise; deficiency confirmed clinically and biochemically but treatment response is uncontrolled.
