Methodology
In vitro (laboratory) tritiated-water release aromatase assay and yeast estrogen screen of a methanolic damiana leaf extract and 24 isolated compounds
Key Findings
The methanolic extract inhibited aromatase dose-dependently (IC50 63.1 microg/mL); pinocembrin and acacetin were the most potent constituents, and mild estrogenic activity was also detected.
Conclusions
Damiana contains constituents with aromatase-inhibiting and weakly estrogenic activity, a plausible but unproven basis for hormonal claims.
Limitations
In vitro only; no human pharmacokinetic or clinical confirmation.
