Kamoen V, Vander Stichele R, Campens L, De Bacquer D
Published in Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews
Methodology
Cochrane systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized trials comparing propionyl-L-carnitine with placebo or other treatments for pain-free and maximum walking distance in stable Fontaine stage II intermittent claudication.
Key Findings
Propionyl-L-carnitine showed modest improvements in walking distance versus placebo, but the evidence base was limited and largely industry-sponsored.
Conclusions
Evidence for propionyl-L-carnitine in intermittent claudication is of low certainty and not sufficient to recommend routine use.
Limitations
Few trials, industry sponsorship, heterogeneous treadmill protocols.
Supplements Studied
The objective of this review is to determine whether propionyl-L-carnitine is efficacious compared with placebo, other drugs, or other interventions used for treatment of intermittent claudication
