Published in Scientific Reports
Methodology
Randomized, double-blind controlled trial of aquatic exercise and/or burdock root extract in elderly women with metabolic syndrome; body composition and serum sex hormones (testosterone, estradiol, SHBG, DHEA-S) assessed.
Key Findings
SHBG and estradiol rose with both aquatic exercise and burdock extract; DHEA-S increased only in the burdock group; the combined intervention produced no synergistic or additive benefit on any sex-hormone outcome.
Conclusions
Burdock root extract independently improved selected sex-hormone and body-composition markers, but added nothing when combined with exercise.
Limitations
Small groups, older women with metabolic syndrome only, hormone surrogates rather than clinical endpoints, no synergy observed.
Supplements Studied
SHBG and estradiol levels were enhanced by both AE and BE and correlated with changes in fat-related body composition.
Outcomes Measured
