Comparison of Glucosamine-Chondroitin Sulfate with and without Methylsulfonylmethane in Grade I-II Knee Osteoarthritis: A Double Blind Randomized Controlled Trial
Lubis AMT, et al
Published in Acta Medica Indonesiana
Methodology
Double-blind randomised controlled trial comparing glucosamine-chondroitin sulfate plus MSM versus glucosamine-chondroitin sulfate alone over 12 weeks, with WOMAC pain, stiffness and function as endpoints.
Key Findings
In 147 patients with grade I-II knee osteoarthritis, adding methylsulfonylmethane to glucosamine-chondroitin sulfate for 12 weeks produced greater improvement in WOMAC pain and function scores than glucosamine-chondroitin alone, though the between-group difference was modest and both arms improved substantially.
Conclusions
Combination of glucosamine-chondroitin sulfate-methylsulfonylmethane showed clinical benefit for patients with knee OA Kellgren-Lawrence grade I-II compared with GC and placebo.
Limitations
No DOI indexed for this journal article; single-country single-centre trial; 12-week duration too short for structural outcomes; no placebo-only arm, so the whole-combination effect cannot be separated from natural history; outcome measures fully self-reported.
Supplements Studied
Combination of glucosamine-chondroitinsulfate-methylsulfonylmethane showed clinical benefit for patients with knee OA Kellgren-Lawrence grade I-II compared with GC and placebo.
GC did not make clinical improvement in overall groups of patients with knee OA Kellgren Lawrence grade I-II.
