International, randomised, sequential, placebo-controlled trial of citicoline 2000 mg/day for 6 weeks in patients with moderate-to-severe acute ischaemic stroke.
Key Findings
Citicoline was not superior to placebo on the global recovery outcome at 90 days; the trial was stopped for futility.
Conclusions
Citicoline is not efficacious in the treatment of moderate-to-severe acute ischaemic stroke.
Limitations
Applies only to acute stroke treatment at high pharmacological doses; concomitant thrombolysis use increased over the trial period.
