Published in Alimentary Pharmacology & Therapeutics
Methodology
Systematic review and random-effects meta-analysis of 10 randomized controlled trials (1030 patients) of peppermint oil versus placebo in IBS, searched to April 2022, judging global symptoms, abdominal pain and adverse events.
Key Findings
Peppermint oil was more efficacious than placebo for global IBS symptoms (RR of not improving 0.65, 95% CI 0.43-0.98) and for abdominal pain, with more reflux as an adverse effect.
Conclusions
Peppermint oil remains an effective antispasmodic option for IBS-type abdominal pain, though recent high-quality trials temper the effect size.
Limitations
Small trials, heterogeneity, and reflux side effects; several included studies at risk of bias.
Supplements Studied
Peppermint oil was more efficacious than placebo for global IBS symptoms (RR of not improving = 0.65; 95% CI 0.43-0.98
