Ju J, Li J, Lin Q, Xu H
Published in Phytomedicine
Methodology
Systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised clinical trials of berberine, alone or with lipid-lowering drugs or lifestyle change, in adults with dyslipidaemia.
Key Findings
Berberine significantly reduced total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and triglycerides and raised HDL cholesterol versus lifestyle change alone, with additive effects when combined with statins.
Conclusions
Berberine is an effective lipid-lowering agent and may be considered as an adjunct or alternative for people intolerant of statins.
Limitations
Trial quality generally low to moderate; heterogeneity in comparators; largely short-term outcomes without hard cardiovascular endpoints.
Supplements Studied
Berberine significantly reduced total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and triglycerides and increased HDL cholesterol compared with lifestyle change alone.
Outcomes Measured
Berberine significantly reduced total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and triglycerides and increased HDL cholesterol compared with lifestyle change alone.
