Published in Nordic Journal of Psychiatry
Methodology
Systematic review and random-effects meta-analysis of 11 randomized placebo-controlled trials of n-3 PUFA supplementation for prevention or treatment of perinatal depression.
Key Findings
Pooled analysis found insufficient evidence that omega-3 supplementation reduces perinatal depressive symptoms, despite possible maternal and infant benefits elsewhere.
Conclusions
Omega-3 cannot currently be recommended specifically for perinatal depression.
Limitations
Small heterogeneous trials; varied EPA:DHA ratios and timing.
Supplements Studied
Although n-3 PUFA supplementation may improve maternal and infant outcomes, our meta-analysis found insufficient evidence to determine its benefit for perinatal depression.
