Macdonald HM, Hardcastle AC, Jugdaohsingh R, Fraser WD, Reid DM, Powell JJ

    Published in Bone

    Methodology

Prospective cohort of 3,198 women examining dietary silicon intake and change in femoral neck and lumbar spine BMD.

    Key Findings

No overall association between silicon intake and BMD; a positive association appeared only in oestrogen-replete women.

    Conclusions

Any skeletal benefit of dietary silicon appears conditional on oestrogen status rather than general.

    Limitations

Observational; food-frequency estimates of silicon intake are imprecise.

    Supplements Studied

    Silica
    Mineral
