Methodology
Observational case-control study comparing mean platelet volume, serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D and C-reactive protein among normal-weight children with primary snoring, polysomnography-confirmed OSAS, and healthy controls.
Key Findings
In 137 normal-weight children, those with primary snoring and those with obstructive sleep apnoea both had significantly higher mean platelet volume and lower serum 25(OH)D than healthy controls, with vitamin D inversely related to CRP, suggesting low-grade systemic inflammation even in simple snoring.
Conclusions
The present study provides evidence of higher MPV and lower vitamin D levels in children with PS as well as in children with OSAS, and supports the underlying inflammation.
Limitations
Cross-sectional observational design cannot establish causality or direction of effect; modest sample; no supplementation arm; seasonal variation in vitamin D not fully controlled; single centre.
