Multicentre, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of methotrexate added to H1 antihistamines in adults with difficult-to-treat chronic spontaneous urticaria.
Key Findings
Adding methotrexate to antihistamines did not significantly increase the proportion of patients achieving well-controlled urticaria compared with placebo.
Conclusions
Methotrexate add-on therapy is not supported for antihistamine-refractory chronic spontaneous urticaria; a well-designed negative trial showing how often promising CSU adjuncts fail.
Limitations
Recruitment challenges in refractory CSU, drug-specific result not generalisable to other adjuncts.
