Methodology
Open-label extension of a double-blind randomised trial; 122 participants received 100 mg phosphatidylserine with omega-3 long-chain fatty acids daily for 15 additional weeks with computerised cognitive testing.
Key Findings
In the open-label extension of a phosphatidylserine-DHA/EPA trial, non-demented elderly with memory complaints who continued PS-DHA for a further 15 weeks showed continued improvement in immediate and delayed verbal recall; benefit was most evident in participants with better baseline cognitive status and lower baseline performance subgroups.
Conclusions
Open-label extension showed improved sustained attention and memory recognition with PS-DHA.
Limitations
Open-label extension without placebo control; attrition from the parent trial; multiple cognitive endpoints without full correction; industry-linked supply of study product.
Supplements Studied
A significant improvement in sustained attention and memory recognition was observed in the PS-DHA naive group.
