Methodology
Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled pilot trial of 170 mg Andrographis paniculata dried extract twice daily for 12 months in relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis patients receiving interferon beta.
Key Findings
Fatigue Severity Scores fell significantly versus placebo, equivalent to a 44% reduction at 12 months. Relapse rate, EDSS and inflammatory parameters showed no significant differences.
Conclusions
Andrographis paniculata was well tolerated and significantly reduced fatigue, without changing disease-activity measures.
Limitations
Only 22 of 25 enrolled patients were analysed, making this a pilot-scale study; all participants also received interferon beta, and disease-modifying outcomes were unchanged.
Supplements Studied
Patients treated with A. paniculata showed a significant reduction in their FSS score as compared to the placebo, equivalent to a 44 % reduction at 12 months.
Outcomes Measured
Patients treated with A. paniculata showed a significant reduction in their FSS score as compared to the placebo, equivalent to a 44 % reduction at 12 months.
